How I Met Your City

Apply until March 10

BEST (Board of European Students of Technology) is a non-profit and voluntary European organisation for students of technology. Since 1989, we have been creating a growing, dynamic, innovative and well-organised network of students, which provides complementary education for future engineers by encouraging communication, cooperation and exchange of students in the exclusive technical universities and faculties. Our priority is to offer high-quality services to technical students from all over Europe.

About the Course

Every year, BEST Porto organizes an Academical Course on Technology, open to all European students in universities members of the network. We will select 22 applicants and give them the opportunity to receive an advanced academical and extracurricular education. They will share ideas with students coming from different countries and learn everything about Portuguese culture and Porto. This year our Summer Course will focus on Urban Planning by analyzing the geographical environment and metabolic impact on the city’s development.
Do you know how your city is actually developing?
How does a city use their natural resources to grow?
In twelve days, you will have the chance to answer these questions and learn how your city is growing right before your eyes, through enthusiastic lectures, workshops and a case study to put in practice what you have learnt. At the end of this course, you will be able to analyze the impact of land use, identify transportation patterns and recognize food, water and energy supply.

Porto is a city located in the north of Portugal, at the mouth of the Douro River. While the city itself only has an area of 41.42 square kilometres and a population of over 235 thousand inhabitants, it is the centre of the second largest metropolitan area in the country. And it was elected as 2017 Best European Destination!

Porto has a rich cultural history, being known as “Cidade Invicta” (which means “unvanquished city”), mainly for having withstood a siege for over one year! Not only that, it’s been said the gastronomy there is quite good, with a special reference to the “Francesinha”, this tiny little dish that is enough to feed an entire army. However, better than our history or gastronomy we have the people, who are warm and welcoming, especially during summer time! Oh, and did you think we were forgetting about Port Wine? We save the best to the last.
